"The Greatest Gift" - A Unique Educational Program for High School Students
In an exemplary collaborative effort, the University Hospital Martin and Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin crafted an interactive educational event named "The Greatest Gift" specifically for high school students. This initiative unfolded during the week of high school finals in May, a period typically devoid of regular classes, offering the students an opportunity to gain insights into the world of transplantation and Slovakia's transplantation program.
In the informative sessions, students were engrossed by fascinating details about blood donation and organ transplant. These topics were elaborately presented by Assoc. Prof. Juraj Sokol from the Clinic of Hematology and Transfusiology, and Mr. Alexander Sendrey, the head of the Coordination Center of the Clinic of General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery.
The head of the Transplantation Center at University Hospital Martin, Prof. Ivana Dedinská, shed light on the ins and outs of transplantation - its prerequisites, limitations, and the future challenges in this intricate medical field.
Adding an element of human connection to the scientific discourse, the event's moderator, Marián Lechan, conducted engaging discussions with patients who had undergone kidney transplantation. The program also featured a slew of interactive quizzes and surveys, contributing to a stimulating and dynamic learning environment.
Held at the Aula Magna auditorium, the event drew the participation of nearly 400 students, creating a unique platform for young minds to interact with medical experts and experience firsthand the transformative power of the "greatest gift" - organ donation.
