Department of Pathological Physiology - history

History of Department of Pathological Physiology JFM CU in Martin

The history of Department of Pathological Physiology of Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin started in academic year 1964/1965. Teaching was provided by teachers of Department of Pathological Physiology of Faculty of Medicine CU in Bratislava – Assoc. Prof. MUDr. E. Bárta, CSc., MUDr. A. Fízeľ, CSc., MUDr. L. Zlatoš and others.

From October 2nd 1966, the activity of Department of Pathological Physiology started within newly forming Faculty of Medicine in Martin on Sklabinská Street 26. Its founder and first head was Assoc. Prof. MUDr. Juraj Korpáš, CSc. During his tenure as head of department (1966-1991) he made enormous effort to build modern scientific and teaching workplace, comparable with similar workplaces nationwide and worldwide. This intention was fulfilled by prof. MUDr. J. Korpáš, DrSc. with support of co-workers – MUDr. I. Ľupták (1966-1967), prof. MUDr. J. Hanáček, CSc. (1966 – present), MUDr. E. Gajdoš (1967-1969), MUDr. D. Hnidková, CSc. (1967-1985), MUDr. E. Žiaková (1969-1972) – very soon. Within 1966-1968, research activities were successfully developed and first results were presented on scientific conferences. In these years, the main research focus of department had profiled – research of interoception of respiratory tract with orientation towards defensive reflexes of the airways. The highlight of research and development of the department was a State Award for prof. MUDr. J. Korpáš, DrSc. (1983) for research of defensive reflexes of the airways.
